Batt Wash

Brush on

Specially blended mixture incorporating zircon to produce an excellent refractory glaze-resistant batt wash for kiln shelves.

Over time, batt wash sinters and sticks to the shelf - especially at high temperature - but it can remain powdery. For this reason it should only be used on the top surface of the shelf and not on props or the kiln itself. An application of batt wash will last for many firings. When it becomes contaminated with glaze it can be scraped off and replaced.

  1. Mix the wash with water to the consistency of milk
  2. Place kiln shelf on flat, stable surface
  3. Apply the mixture evenly to the top surface of the kiln shelf using a paint roller or large decorators brush.
  4. Once the surface is covered, repeat application at 90 degrees to the original roller/brush strokes until a satisfactory layer has been achieved.
  5. Firing to stoneware will fix the batt wash to the kiln shelf
  6. Chisel glaze drips off before reapplying wash. ALWAYS wear eye protection
